Foster*A*Life was established in June, 2004, by Lubbock psychologist, Dr. Shaun H. Keel. Dr. Keel worked with foster children in the Lubbock area for many years. Most of these children are in the custody of Children's Protective Services and have been removed from their homes due to physical abuse, sexual abuse and/or neglect. These children have been traumatized by the abuse, but also by the removal from the only caretakers they have known. They have missed out on so many things in their short lives. While in her office, these children would frequently make comments to Dr. Keel about not having things many children take for granted such as having a birthday party or playing on a basketball team.

As a mother, Dr. Keel always wanted to do more for these children than she was able to do through her practice. Therefore, she created Foster*A*Life so that these "forgotten" children of the Lubbock area could have special dreams and opportunities to help them feel important and to improve their self-esteem. With the help of her husband, Carl, her sons, Ryan and Conor, and friends, Foster*A*Life was established and the agency began fulfilling foster children's dreams. Recently, Foster*A*Life expanded their vision and are now providing services to children who have an open CPS case, but they have not been placed in foster care. In addition, Foster*A*Life is providing services to children who have been adopted through CPS as well as children who have aged out of care. In 2025, the organization received 263 requests that resulted in 1,419 children being provided with services. This year - 2026 - is the 22nd Anniversary for Foster*A*Life!

After playing onstage with The Landsharks at his own Margaritaville bar and restaurant in Key West, Jimmy Buffett proclaimed, “These guys knew my songs better than I did!”
